CEDAR FALLS, Ia. — When deciding which quarterback gives Northern Iowa the best chance to enter Ames and emerge with a stunning upset, it's the guy who nearly did exactly that only two years ago.
After winning his second preseason quarterback battle in three years — the first one to get the job, the second one to keep it — Will McElvain will enter his third year as the Panthers' top signal caller Saturday at No. 8 Iowa State. This fall's position competition was much closer than originally indicated, once UNI beefed up its quarterback room this offseason with Michigan State transfer Theo Day and JUCO all-American Matt Morrisey.
