PITTSBURGH, Penn. — It has been 19 long years since the Northern Iowa wrestling program could celebrate on the final night of the NCAA Championships. The last Panther wrestler to win an individual national title was Tony Davis, who won at 149 pounds in 2000.
On Saturday night, Drew Foster put an end to that drought. The senior defeated Cornell’s Max Dean, 6-4, in the NCAA finals at 184 pounds. He is also the first national champion for head coach Doug Schwab.
Foster struck first, corralling Dean’s ankles for a takedown near the edge in the opening minute.
