Former Lincoln standout Will McElvain shows star potential in UNI debut vs. Iowa State

AMES, Ia. — It felt almost like 2017 at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday.

Almost.

That was the year Will McElvain, an undersized, scrappy quarterback out of Des Moines Lincoln, was the only player in Class 4A to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000. At 5-foot-11 (with shoes on), and at a city school that doesn't get recruited heavily, McElvain received no Division I scholarship offers. Iowa State gave him a preferred walk-on offer as a defensive back, but he wanted to play quarterback.
