Women’s soccer (5-10-4, 3-6-2 Mid-American Conference) defeated the top-seed Ball State University Cardinals in a 4-3 penalty kick shootout yesterday in Muncie, Indiana to advance to the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals.
The Huskies came into the MAC tournament as the eighth seed, and before yesterday had not collected a win in their last seven matches. NIU also had not beaten the Cardinals since 2010 with Ball State defeating NIU 2-0 Oct. 9 in the regular season matchup.
The match went into a best-of-five penalty kick shootout where NIU sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee made two huge saves.
"We've been taking [penalty kicks] at practice for a couple of weeks now," NIU Head Coach John Ross said.
