SAN DIEGO -- Juwan Washington brought back the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, Tariq Thompson had two interceptions -- including an 83-yard TD return -- and No. 19 San Diego State beat Northern Illinois 34-28 Saturday night to continue its best start since 1975.
Rashaad Penny, the nation's second-leading rusher coming in, was held to 107 yards on 25 carries for his lowest of the season. He did catch a 33-yard scoring pass from Christian Chapman in the first quarter.
Penny was poked in the eye by Antonio Jones-Davis while at the bottom of a pile in the second quarter and came off the field in pain.
