NIU roundup: Baseball falls late, Grable becomes softball's all-time home run leader

The Evansville baseball team broke a tie game with three runs in the seventh inning to beat Northern Illinois 5-2 in the series opener on Friday.

Northern Illinois reliever Donovin Sims took the loss, allowing three runs in five innings of work for the Huskies, who dropped to 1-8 on the season. Tommy Hook and Johnny Zubek each went 2 for 3 for the Huskies and Luke Yapp was 2 for 4 with two runs. Zubek and Brandon Mallder each had an RBI in the loss.

“The margin for victory is so small that you have to be locked in for all 27 outs and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way," Northern Illinois coach Mike Kunigonis said.
