NIU football: Hare out for Huskies' first spring practice

DeKALB – Northern Illinois quarterback Drew Hare spent the first practice of spring football the same way he did the end of last season.

He was on the sidelines in street clothes.

The Huskies opened up the 2016 spring season on Tuesday morning with a helmets-only practice at Huskie Stadium with their starting quarterback still recovering from a ruptured Achilles he suffered against Toledo in November.

"We're going to take it slow," Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said of Hare's progression. "We probably originally thought he'd be closer to 100 percent than he is, but as you go through it, as with any recovery, you take some twists and turns.
