Local roundup: NIU baseball splits doubleheader, takes series

The Northern Illinois baseball team won its second Mid-American Conference series of the season after splitting a doubleheader with Central Michigan on Saturday, winning in walkoff fashion in the late game.

A bases-loaded wild pitch gave the Huskies the 3-2 win the late game after a 7-6 loss in the opener.

Reliever Joe Hawks picked up the first win of his NIU career as he worked out of a jam in the top of the 10th while Donovin Sims tossed 9 1/3 innings. Tommy Hook went 5 for 7 at the plate in the doubleheader. His last hit eventually resulted in the final run, scored by pinch runner Alex Smith on a wild pitch.
