Thought No. 1: For the fans at home, the frosting on the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball cake is entertaining, glib TV analyst Bill Raftery who has steadfastly climbed the CBS-TV sports broadcasting ladder.
Working his 34th NCAA hoops tournament, the 73-year-old Raftery now hangs with the big boys, Jim Nantz and Grant Hill, for his second straight Final Four. The former Seton Hall head coach (1970-81) is a breath of fresh on-air and a 180-degree shift from humorless stuffed shirts such as Billy Packer (who was only good teamed with Al McGuire as a press row foil on NBC-TV decades ago).
