The University of Vermont has cancelled its women’s basketball team’s December game against North Carolina over a state law that governs transgender bathroom access.
According to the Burlington Free Press, Catamounts athletic director Jeff Schulman said the cancellation of the Dec. 28 game was due to concerns over House Bill 2, a North Carolina law which requires transgender people to use bathrooms in schools and public buildings that correspond to the sex on their birth certificates, rather than the gender in which they identity.
Schulman said the law discriminates against the transgender community.
“We strive very hard to create an inclusive climate for our students and staff in which they all can feel safe, respected, and valued,” he said in statement.
