The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball family received some bad news on Wednesday.
Legendary announcer Woody Durham, also known as “the voice of the Tar Heels”, was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia. Durham spent 40 years calling UNC basketball and football games for the Tar Heel Sports Network.
During his time as announcer, he gave Tar Heels fans listening on the radio a vivid picture of what was going on in more than 1,800 broadcasts. He even won the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year award 13 times.
On Wednesday, Durham revealed his condition in a letter via GoHeels:
“Last winter, I was diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder, primary progressive aphasia, that affects my language expression.
