Top-ranked Stanford prevailed over No. 2 North Carolina in the 2019 NCAA Championship game at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California on Sunday night. In front of a jubilant crowd of 9,591 fans, the two teams battled through a scoreless regulation and two overtimes before the Cardinal topped the Tar Heels 5-4 on penalty kicks.
Stanford, led by Cardinal forward Catarina Macario’s eight shots, outshot North Carolina 21-12 for the game. Macario also led all players with three shots on goal, and was followed by Sophia Smith’s two. Stanford compiled six shots on goal for the game. The Tar Heels managed just four shots on goal; UNC freshman defender Maycee Bell had two of them.
