The second-ranked University of North Carolina women’s soccer program defeated No. 9 Southern Cal 3-2 on Friday night to advance to the NCAA College Cup. It’s an NCAA record 29th appearance for the Tar Heels in the 38-year history of the postseason tournament.
The Tar Heels trailed early after a goal in the 17th minute by USC’s Penelope Hocking. Her 18th goal of the season had the Trojans on top until UNC’s Emily Fox scored her second goal of the season in the game’s 39th minute. The Tar Heels struck again in the 55th minute when Brianna Pinto knocked in her 11th goal of the season on a short header.
