This time last year, both UNC men’s and women’s soccer were undefeated going into the meat of their conference schedules. The men had been playing to a lot of draws before claiming an unexpected victory against Duke that showed the country they were for real, while the women looked every bit the title contenders that they were expected to be. This year, while the situations are pretty different, the results have been only slightly worse. Carlos Somoano’s men are indeed repeating that impressive streak from last year, with a 5-0-3 record halfway through their regular season. Meanwhile, in Damon Nahas’ first year as a head coach after Anson Dorrance’s unexpected retirement just ahead of the season, the women’s team is 10-1-0 with seven games to go.
