Tar Heel runner Ethan Strand broke the collegiate record for the indoor mile this past weekend at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, adding another accomplishment to his amazing UNC running career.

The Carolina senior from Vestavia, Alabama finished with a blistering time of 3:48:32. The previous record was 3:50:39, set by Oregon runner Cooper Teare in 2021. Two seconds may not seem like a lot, but new records are usually set by a matter of tenths or even hundredths of a second. Strand is the first collegiate runner to break the 3:50 mile mark. His effort was good enough to land him among the all time current indoor mile marks; he now has the third fastest indoor mile mark in the world, behind only Yomif Kejelcha and Yared Nuguse.
