Football might be less solely won in the trenches today than in the eras when that aphorism was coined, but that doesn’t mean that the line of scrimmage isn’t still tremendously important. The past several years have been times of consternation for UNC Football on the offensive line — the results have been pretty good, with elite passing offenses and running games that have ranged from passable to awesome, based on which you’d assume that the offensive lines have been pretty good. But UNC has also consistently been close to the national lead in sacks allowed during that time, and it certainly has felt, from a fan’s perspective, that every time the Heels have needed to rely on their offensive line, in short-yardage or red-zone situations, it has come up short.
