In 1997, Dean Smith once said that the University of North Carolina was a women’s soccer school in honor of the program’s incredible success at a time where both basketball and football were rolling.
If you were to apply that logic to this current era, you might say that UNC right now is a field hockey school. The Tar Heels field hockey team has won five of the last six NCAA tournament titles, which has them at a record 11 all time. Even after the retirement of the program’s legendary coach Karen Shelton, they picked where they left off under Erin Maton, who took the head role after ending her run as the most legendary player in the program’s history.
