The Tar Heel fencing teams combined for a 9-1 record Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The Tar Heel women went 5-0 and the men 4-1 in a day of competition at the Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center, with outstanding individual performances across the board.
“I’m very pleased with our performance,” UNC coach Ron Miller said. “The best thing is we were well-balanced. Every weapon pulled its weight in every meet.”
The women’s squad was only challenged in the first meet of the day, a 15-12 win over Cornell. After that, the Tar Heels beat Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Drew by wide margins.
