When I wrote about how good and fun UNC’s Diamond Heels have been this year, I made a throwaway mention about Vance Honeycutt inserting himself into the conversation as UNC’s best baseball player ever. It’s far from a closed case, with program legends like Dustin Ackley, Andrew Miller, Brian Roberts, and B.J. Surhoff also in contention, but Honeycutt’s combination of elite defense, power, and speed is just something you don’t see a lot of in college baseball. About halfway through this season, Honeycutt became the first player in the history of the ACC — not UNC, the entire conference — to hit 50 home runs and steal 70 bases in a career.
