UNC and Texas Tech had to shuffle the schedule around to get all three games of their series played while dealing with the gross weather conditions plaguing the southeastern part of the country, but in the end, we were treated to a high-level series between two teams representing historic programs. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels got the better of Texas Tech, sweeping Friday’s doubleheader before gutting out a 4-2 victory in Saturday’s Game 3 to come away with their fifth opening-weekend sweep in the last 6 years. In an immediate and noticeable change from last year, the Heels did not hit a home run across the three games, which never happened in a three-game series for last year’s record-setting team — they relied on free bases, singles and doubles, and aggressive baserunning to put up offense.
