In the mid-1960s, Peter Gammons enrolled at the University of North Carolina and became a curious reporter for the campus’s Daily Tar Heel. Taught by Ned Gammons to be inclusive, Peter was especially drawn to the burgeoning head basketball coach Dean Smith, who was about to make Charlie Scott the first Black athlete at the university.
