Members of the UNC track and field team recently visited Y.E. Smith Elementary School in Durham, N.C., to talk to the students about collegiate academics and what it's like being part of an athletic team. The student-athletes spent a rainy Friday afternoon signing autographs, exchanging high fives and leading cheers from class to class, providing inspiration for the youngsters.
In addition to visiting several classrooms, in which the Tar Heels chatted with the kids about their school days and what subjects they like best, the team took part in a school assembly celebrating College Day.
“It felt great to have the kids be so happy to see us and talking about their futures and college and the dreams they want to achieve,” said Rayna Yvars, a junior pole vaulter from Cary, N.
