Ryan Gerard shot a 3-under-par 69 and the University of North Carolina shot even par as a team in the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate Friday at the Wailua Golf Club.
Carolina finished 13 strokes better than it did in Thursday's opening round and moved up five spots to 12th of 21 teams. Only California, which improved nine positions to eighth place, made a larger move in the standings on Friday than the Tar Heels.
Gerard, a junior from Raleigh, birdied his first two holes and finished the day with five birdies and only two bogeys for his eighth round this season in the 60s.
