CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina juniors J.B. Bukauskas, Logan Warmoth and Brian Miller were selected on the first night of the 2017 MLB Draft Monday. With all three Tar Heels going in the top 36 picks, Carolina has now had 22 first and compensation round picks in its history and 10 since 2006.
Bukauskas was selected 15th overall by the Houston Astros. The first-team All-American and Dick Howser Trophy finalist from Ashburn, Virginia, was 21-6 with a 3.18 ERA over three seasons at UNC and each of his 42 career starts came on the weekend. Bukauskas struck out a career-best 116 batters as a junior and ended the 2017 season with 294 career punchouts, fifth-most all-time at Carolina.
