Sneads Ferry toddler is 1,000th child to get cochlear implant at UNC

One of Tatum Lanier's first words was "mama." But she communicated it with five fingers spread wide and her thumb touching her chin. The 13-month-old daughter of Melinda and John Lanier, like them, was born deaf. On Wednesday, doctors in Chapel Hill will activate for the first time the cochlear implant surgically placed in her head in late August and virtually unnoticeable beneath her blonde hair.
