NETHERLANDS – Former University of North Carolina standout distance runner Shalane Flanagan broke the American record in the road 10k on Sunday at the Rabobank Tilburg Ladies 10k.
Flanagan finished the race in 31:03, three seconds ahead of the previous record. The previous record was set by Lynn Jennings and had stood for 25 years. Flanagan had gone into the race with the intent of breaking the record.
Flanagan now owns the American record in the 10,000 and the road 10k. Flanagan recently competed in the IAAF World Championships and finished sixth in the 10,000, her highest finish in a World Championship.
