CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (theACC.com) – After presenting Karen Shelton with yet another milestone coaching win on Friday night, her North Carolina field hockey team will try to add another conference title to her resume on Sunday.
But wherever the Tar Heels go from here, they will be hard-pressed to top Friday evening for drama or intensity.
UNC outlasted Syracuse, 4-3 in overtime in the semifinals of the ACC Field Hockey Championship, giving Shelton her 701st career victory and lifting her past UConn's Nancy Stevens to the top spot on the NCAA's all-time coaching list.
With the hard-fought decision, the Tar Heels earned a spot opposite top-seeded Louisville (8-1) in Sunday's noon championship game.
