This coming Saturday, the North Carolina men’s soccer team will face Charlotte in the Kirk Urso Memorial Match at Macpherson Stadium in Browns Summit, North Carolina. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., in a rematch of the 2011 NCAA National Championship match won by UNC. Urso served as team captain that season for the Tar Heels.
A 2012 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Urso made four consecutive NCAA Men's College Cup appearances, before being selected by the Columbus Crew in the first round (No. 10 overall) of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft. After appearing in six games for the Crew in 2012, Urso passed away suddenly at the age of 22 from an Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy on August 5, 2012.
