LAS VEGAS - The first day of the 2020 Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship saw North Carolina freshman Kacie Harvey pull a huge upset over the second seed in the singles field on Friday from the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV.
Harvey, a rookie from Braintree, Mass., knocked off No. 16 Lisa Marie Rioux, 6-3, 6-3, in the Round of 16 for her first win over a ranked opponent with the Tar Heels. Harvey improves to 7-1 having won her last six singles matches dating back to November.
Senior Makenna Jones and junior Alle Sanford advance to the quarterfinals in both the singles and doubles draw.
