A key hire for new North Carolina head coach Mack Brown was defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, who came to Chapel Hill after five seasons in the same role at Army. Bateman was a Broyles Award finalist (best assistant coach in college football) in 2016 and 2018 after leading some of the best defenses in the country. In 2018, Army was third in the nation in third-down defense. (Inside Carolina)
