RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former North Carolina standout Shalane Flanagan took sixth in the women’s marathon at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Flanagan finished as the top American running the race in 2:25:06.
Flanagan led the United States’ three participants who all finished in the top-10. It was Flanagan’s best finish at the Olympics in the marathon. She already has a bronze medal in the 10,000 from the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
“That’s by far and away the best result we’ve ever had,” Flanagan said. “We came here to run the races of our lives, and we pretty much did.
