On May 12, 1996, a day meant for celebration — graduation, Mother’s Day — the Phi Gamma Delta house caught fire after a cigarette was thrown in the garbage. Benjamin Watson Woodruff, Robert Joshua Weaver, Joanna Howell, Mark Briggs Strickland and Anne McBride Smith — all UNC students — lost their lives in the fire. (Daily Tar Heel)
