A weird quirk of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is that since the field was expanded to 64 teams in 1999, the team designated as the #1 overall national seed has only won the championship just once. In the very first year of this current format’s existence in 1999, #1 overall seed Miami ran the table through regionals, super regionals, and the College World Series undefeated to take home the national title. While plenty of #1 overall seeds since then have gotten close, and many other teams have won the championship as one of the other top 16 national seeds, no other team has followed the path the Hurricanes did 25 years ago.
