ATHENS, Ga. – North Carolina's William Blumberg finished his freshman season as the NCAA singles runner-up after falling Monday in the men's tennis championship match, played at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Virginia senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski earned the title, taking the first set 6-4 and then claiming the second 7-6 by winning the tiebreaker 7-5.
Blumberg finished his freshman campaign with a 31-3 singles record. He's the first player in UNC history to reach the finals of the NCAA singles draw. No Tar Heel had ever advanced past the quarterfinals.
“What a historic run for William,” UNC coach Sam Paul said.
