On the occasion of his 46th birthday, Jim Tatum towered over college football. He perfected the Split-T offense and rode it to four titles in three different conferences. He owned a national championship. He was a driving force in the creation of the ACC. He lifted North Carolina, his moribund alma mater, to a consensus top-10 preseason ranking. He died the next day.
