An investigation into the University of North Carolina's academic fraud claims is dealing a serious blow to the Tar Heels' athletic program.
The report shows how fake "paper classes" were set up so athletes would not have to attend class at the scheduled time, and would only be graded on a single paper they turned in at the end of the semester. These athletes were then given the grades they needed to remain eligible, no matter what their paper deserved.
These classes were also open to non-athletes.
Department of African and Afro-American Studies manager Deborah Crowder was the one behind these classes and grading these papers.
When she retired in 2009, the football academic councilors freaked out a little bit. This was a slide they used in a presentation with the football coaches:
Essentially, all the students in these classes had to do was write one paper - and most plagiarized.
These classes were not just a football problem, though football was the most indicated by the report.
