The North Carolina Tar Heels received a big boost on the recruiting trail on Saturday when four-star sharpshooter Kenny Williams committed to UNC. According to Ross Martin of 247sports, adding Williams gives the Heels all of the pieces they need for a championship run:
When 2015 shooting guard Kenny Williams (Chesterfield, VA/Lloyd C. Bird) committed to North Carolina on Saturday afternoon he became the final piece of the 2015-2016 Tar Heel squad poised to make a Championship run. Head coach Roy Williams and his staffed wanted to add one more player to this team. They went hard after top five small forwards Brandon Ingram (Duke) and Jaylen Brown (Cal), but those prospect chose to compete elsewhere. Instead UNC grabbed Williams after he was released from his VCU letter-of-intent following Shaka Smart decision to leave Richmond for the Texas head coaching job.
In Williams, the Tar Heels gain a shooter that could make an impact as freshman. He has a quick release and can shoot off the dribble or pass. He shot 44% during the 2014 EBYL circuit while going against the top prospects in the country. Williams won't start, but he will play next season. He is the only true shooting guard on the roster and should spilt time at the two with Marcus Paige and Theo Pinson.
Williams becomes UNC's first pure shooter recruit since P.J. Hairston (who only had one real productive season in Chapel Hill) and Wayne Ellington (three years and a National Championship). He is the type of player UNC has wanted to add for many classes. The Tar Heels have struggled to shoot from distance the last few years and the hope is that Williams can fill that void for the foreseeable future.
