The investigation into the University of North Carolina's academic issues came to a close today, revealing everything that went on surrounding the "bogus classes" taken by many student-athletes.
In response to the report, the university announced the following actions:
- Starting to electronically track students in independent study classes
- Handing a copy of the report to the NCAA to face any more punishment that might be handed down
- Enhance efforts to align all advising and support programs between students and student-athletes
- Plan to conduct an institution-wide audit to ensure no gaps in policy and create constant periods for re-evaluation
- Establish process for consistent evaluation of every program and department through provosts
- Launching new public records website to enhance accountability and accessibility
- Reports on class clustering among student-athletes
- Firing at least four "employees" of the university among nine that are under review
Chancellor Carol Folt would not elaborate on who those employees were or if any coaches were among them.
UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham says that the report does not give him any evidence to enact any self-punishment from the school, meaning any discipline the athletics program will face will come from the NCAA.
