N.C. State’s terrible start to the NCAA baseball tournament turned into a remarkable comeback.
The Wolfpack overcame an abysmal shortened start by ACC ERA leader Johnny Piedmonte to win its NCAA tournament opener 7-6 in 12 innings Friday in front of 2,124 at the Lexington Regional in Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Outfielder Garrett Suggs, who entered the game in the ninth inning, singled to center, eventually scoring on a wild pitch to break a 5-5 tie in the 12th inning. Catcher Brad Debo singled to score another run to provide the final advantage.
Piedmonte allowed three sharply hit doubles, a walk and an out before being lifted in the first inning after 16 pitches.
