NC State drops NCAA tournament opener to Campbell, 5-4

NC State spent nearly the entirety of Friday losing to Campbell, and on Saturday it pushed the job to completion. The Camels won a weather-delayed contest, 5-4, and sent the Wolfpack to the loser’s bracket in Greenville. Good luck on getting out of that hole.

Crooked numbers will get you beaten quickly, and to that end, Campbell’s four-run first inning was ultimately the difference. The Camels jumped on State starter Reid Johnston with an RBI single, a sac fly, and then a two-run shot to put the Wolfpack in big trouble out of the gate.

State got three back in the bottom of the third inning and did not allow but one more run on the day, but the mistakes of the first inning were the defining moments of the game.
