NC State and Bowl Game Numbers

The NC State football team currently sits with an overall record of 5-2 ahead of their Saturday match-up with Florida State (4-4). With another win, the Wolfpack will reach bowl eligibility, and given the proliferation of bowl games and potential lack of eligible teams to play in them, six wins should all but guarantee another appearance for the NC State program.

A bowl appearance this year would be NC State’s fifth consecutive under Dave Doeren and would have great significance in relation to the history of the football program. Here’s a look at a few details to put that into context:

  • With his fifth bowl game appearance, Dave Doeren would be tied for 2nd all-time (with Chuck Amato) among NC State coaches in bowl game appearances (Dick Sheridan is first with six)
  • Doeren’s fifth consecutive bowl appearance would tie him with Sheridan for the longest streak by any one coach
  • Five bowl games in six years would give Doeren the 3rd best mark among coaches in school history (Lou Holtz, 4/4; Dick Sheridan, 6/7)
  • The five consecutive team bowl appearances would be the 2nd longest streak in school history (1988-1994, 7 appearances)
  • This would be the 8th bowl game in nine years for NC State, which would tie the best mark in school history (1986-1994)
  • If State were to win their bowl game (and assuming he coached it), Doeren would be tied with Chuck Amato for the best bowl record among State coaches (4-1)
