Over the past five NHL drafts, there have only been three goalies selected in the first round. That includes last year, when USA Hockey National Team Development Program goaltender Spencer Knight was selected with the No. 13 pick by the Florida Panthers.
While it's not a common occurrence, it's likely to happen again in 2020, as Russian goaltender Yaroslav Askarov has been projected by man to be a first-round selection. And while there may not be another goalie drafted for a while after that, there are some other talented ones in this year's class who have the potential to eventually become solid NHL players.
