New And Improved OT

Looking to reduce the number of games ending in a shootout, the NHL’s decision to introduce the exciting new 3 on 3 overtime has been a success.

Before the 2005-06 season, games ended in a tie, with each team earning one point for the standings. As an attempt to win back fans after the lockout, the NHL introduced the overtime period and shootout so there would be a winning team, earning the full two points, and one OT losing team, earning one point.
