The NHL has experienced a shift in the players who are dominating the league and vying for the Hart Trophy. Last year, Jamie Benn led the league with 86 points, and only five forwards scored more than 80 points. This lack of offensive production made an even stronger case for goaltender Carey Price to win the Hart Trophy.
This season, however, Patrick Kane has already scored 85 points and will likely surpass 100. It will be very difficult for any other player, particularly a defenseman, to earn credible consideration for league MVP.
