When you think about quarterbacks what are the main qualities you look for? For us, it’s a sharp brain, a strong throwing arm, and explosive pace and power.
Here we focus on the latter of those as we look at the fastest quarterbacks in the NFL right now. Let’s see who makes the cut.
#5. Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos
First up in our look at the fastest quarterbacks in the NFL is Russell Wilson. Although the newly acquired Denver Broncos man doesn’t run as much as he used to in his Seattle days but, boy, when he’s given the space to open up he doesn’t half fly. Back when he ran the 40 yard dash, Wilson shot through it with a speed of 4.55.
That time was the second-best total from his position in that entire draft class. We’ve seen that speed on display as well when he breaks out of the pocket.
Don’t sleep on the pace that Wilson still has; he can prove a lot of people wrong in that category. If you are betting on Bovada, you can see that the Broncos are right now in the top 10 of the overall NFL future odds for the next season, but Wilson can be a key figure in improving their chances.
#4. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
If Wilson is a man with a surprising turn of pace, the same cannot be said about Jalen Hurts. Last season we got to see Hurts, who was drafted by the Eagles as a round two pick back in 2020, take off down the field on a pretty consistent basis. The Philadelphia Eagles applied a tactic that allowed Hurts to run it to himself more and more often as the season progressed and it worked wonders for them as a team with the player proving he’s amongst the fastest quarterbacks in the league when he hits full tilt.
If you’re not convinced by that then how about the 4.59 40 yard dash he recorded? That puts him towards the top of the list in terms of quarterbacks in the league right now.
#3. Justin Fields, Chicago Bears
Putting Justin Fields at number three in this list is something that will likely raise a few eyebrows but based on what we’ve seen from him, he definitely has the potential to be amongst the best runners in the league. He was only drafted last year and turned in a blistering time at the 2021 NFL combine running the 40 yard dash in 4.46; there have been reports that his time should have been a fraction quicker than that too with 4.44 stated by some outlets.
As yet, we’ve not seen Fields utilize that speed out on the grass. Eventually though, those opportunities will surely present themselves. When they do, we fully expect him to prove that he is one of the fastest quarterbacks in the NFL.
#2. Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
We’ll be honest, Kyler Murray is incredibly close to moving up to number one on this list, but for now he’ll have to settle for his silver medal spot here at number two. Murray has always had insane confidence in his speed, even claiming that he could beat Michael Vick’s record for the fastest 40-yard dash from a quarterback. Murray chose not to run the drill at the NFL Combine or at his Pro Day but there are still unofficial takes of him running it anyways.
One of them reports that he was able to run a blistering 4.38 40 yard dash in 2017. If that wasn’t already impressive, the report also claims that the Oklahoma graduate was battling an injury at the time as well. Given that he had this type of speed back then, we’re certain that he’s at the very least maintained it up to this season. If he finds a way to up it then that’s a seriously scary prospect.
#1. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
Last but not least we turn out attention to Lamar Jackson. Whilst we talk about stats and speed tests, sometimes your eyes don’t fail you and it is wildly difficult to imagine a quarterback that is as fast as Jackson in the NFL right now. The Baltimore Ravens signal caller consistently shows his electric speed down the field turning in pounding runs practically every time he touches the ball.
While he was never able to get out and run the official 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine or on his Pro Day, he did wind up taking an unofficial crack at it during a “Speed Day” at Louisville. That attempt saw him run an unbelievable 4.34 40 yard dash; in the modern era that’s one of the fastest runs we’ve ever seen from a QB.
There you have it, a look at the fastest quarterbacks in the NFL right now. Will any of the next draft class be able to mix it up with this lot? They’ve got their work cut out, that’s for sure.
