In an expected move, the New York Jets announced they released CB Antonio Cromartie Monday. Cromartie had a down 2015 campaign, and the move saved the Jets $8 million in cap space. Cromartie can still play, but he simply wasn't worth that amount of money for the cap-strapped Jets.
At just 31 years old, Cromartie will get another shot in the NFL. It shouldn't cost that much to sign Cromartie, as his value is down. But what team will add Cromartie this offseason? He's not the same player he once was, but he can contribute and possibly rediscover his previous form. With that in mind, here are five teams that could sign Cromartie.
Arizona Cardinals
Cromartie played for the Cardinals for one season, and he played well there. The team still needs corner help, as it never really replaced Cromartie after he left before the 2015 season. Cromartie nearly stuck with the Cardinals before leaving for New York. It's a possibility, but Cromartie loves Todd Bowles, the former Cardinals DC who is now the Jets head coach.
Dallas Cowboys
Much like Arizona, the Cowboys need corner help. Cromartie says he loves Dallas, and considered playing for them last year. The Cowboys could cut Brandon Carr and allow Morris Claiborne to walk, leaving a major need at corner. The Cowboys don't have much cap space and Cromartie could be forced to take a cheap deal to play for them. For more Cowboys rumors, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
New York Jets
Don't rule out the possibility of the Jets bringing back Cromartie on a cheaper deal. NJ.com reports Cromartie is open to returning to New York for less money because he loves the team and Bowles. The Jets don't have anything set in stone at the position outside of Darrelle Revis. Buster Skrine struggled and Marcus Williams is unproven. The team has no idea what it will get out of Dee Milliner. A return to New York is a serious option for Cromartie.
Oakland Raiders
The last time Cromartie was in Oakland, he was burnt far too often by the Raiders. That might impact the Raiders' view of him, but the there's no doubt the team needs corners. David Amerson showed promise, but that's pretty much it. Money isn't an issue for Oakland, which has tons of cap space. If Oakland has interest in Cromartie, they could be serious players. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are in the same boat as the Cowboys, minus Cromartie's previous interest. The Steelers could lose three of their top corners, as all are free agents. Even if they're all brought back, the team needs a new No. 2 across from William Gay (one of the free agents). Money is tight in Pittsburgh, but Cromartie could take less for a shot at a Super Bowl. There's a need here, but the Steelers could elect to pursue someone younger.
