Washington makes case to federal court in trademark challenge

Last June, the debate regarding the nickname of the Washington NFL franchise reached a new level after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office determined that the team’s trademarks should be cancelled because the nickname is disparaging to Native Americans. The team appealed, and thanks to the slow metabolism of the legal system arguments were finally held today in federal court.

Via Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, lawyers representing the Native Americans attacking the name argued that last week’s Supreme Court ruling allowing Texas to ban license plates bearing the Confederate flag bolsters their case.
