Sheldon Rankins believed to have broken fibula

The New Orleans Saints are holding their breath after first-round defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins was carted off the field during Monday's practice.

Per multiple reports, Rankins was hurt during a goal-line drill, prompting Saints doctors to descend and examine his lower leg. The team has yet to make an official announcement on the rookie's status.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Rankins is believed to have suffered a broken fibula based on initial tests, per a source.

"We'll get an update and we'll keep you posted, but we're trying to get the reps in and obviously you never want to see a player go down," coach Sean Payton said after practice.
