The darker side of football reared its head early in Week 2 when P.J. Williams, a cornerback for the New Orleans Saints, went down in a brutal collision and appeared unable to move as he was carted off the field.
Williams, a 23-year-old rookie who was a third-round pick out of Florida State, came in low to try and tackle Larry Donnell of the Giants early in the first quarter, and Donnell’s knee collided with Williams’ helmet, jarring it violently to the side. As Williams fell to the ground, his teammate, Craig Robertson, came over the top of him, and also collided with his helmet, pushing his head and neck in the other direction.
