For two years now, the NFL and Zebra Technologies have been monitoring the real-time position and movement of all players via microchips in the shoulder pads. So far all we've gotten out of that is "Next Gen Stats" that show us a player's top speed during a play or similar data that seems impressive, but not terribly useful. But as ESPN's Kevin Seifert explains, sometime in May (once free agency and the draft are over), the NFL's teams are going to get full access to all this data -- where players are lining up, how quickly they are reacting and moving, and how their speed might be changing over the course of a game or season.
